It’s Adventurin’ Time

While I have always been interested in gaming since as far back as I can remember, it was only in the late 1990′s when i first owned a games console a SEGA master system II. Due to my late introduction to gaming and subsequently owning consoles of the “3d” age I was never much interested in Adventure games. However in recent times and with the resurgence of adventure games I have managed to get into them much more. In 2009 upon reading about the remakes of The Secret of Monkey Island game and saw the masses of positive reviews for both the original and the remake I decided that i should go ahead and buy it.

SOMI

Not only was it as humorous as all of the review sites said but it also managed to be fairly fun for me to play. Suffice to say I bought it twice on the Ipod Touch and the PC. Therefore when they announced a remake of the second game LeChuck’s Revenge I pre-ordered it at first chance, the game was even better than the first with subtle humor and overly obvious parody scenes (the whole end to the game!!)

MI2

Obviously then I very much want to play MI3 but with a lack of a remake and a current lack of fund to purchase the (im told) excellent original i have decided to play one of the “free” adventure games from abandonia.com . Herein lies my problem however, with me not knowing a great deal of these games I cannot choose between the four that I have shortlisted. I am also intending to attempt to turn this into a let’s play video series.

The Shortlist

Police Quest – In Pursuit of the Death Angel

Released in 1987 using Sierra’s Adventure Game Interpreter parser engine, Police Quest cast the player as Sonny Bonds, a 15 year veteran police officer in the fictional town of Lytton, California. Assigned to traffic duty, Sonny investigates what appears to be a simple car crash but turns out to be a homicide. Sonny continues to give a traffic violation citation, single-handedly face a tough gang of drunken bikers, and make DUI arrest. As the game progresses, he goes from patrol to temporary narcotics detective and finally undercover, tracking “The Death Angel”, a murderous drug dealer named Jessie Bains. Sonny is assisted by “Sweet Cheeks” Marie, his former high school sweetheart who is now working as a prostitute.

Quest for Glory IV – Shadows of Darkness

Drawn without warning from victory in Tarna, the Hero arrives without equipment or explanation in the middle of the hazardous Dark Caves in the distant land of Mordavia. Upon escaping from the closing cave mouth, he meets a mysterious young woman named Katrina who assists him again several times in his journey. He encounters several old foes, including the not-quite-dead Ad Avis and the ogress Baba Yaga, and makes several bizarre new allies. The Hero is ultimately coerced into assisting Ad Avis’ Dark Master (who turns out to be Katrina) in collecting the Dark Rituals that will awaken Avoozl the Dark One (an obvious Cthulhu pastiche, and most likely a reference to the Slavic deity Chernobog) from his slumber underneath the Dark Caves. Naturally, the Hero is freed from this control and thwarts their plan, destroying Ad Avis in the process. During the celebration of the Hero’s somewhat pyrrhic victory, the wizard Erasmus appears, summoning the Hero to the land of Silmaria.

Discworld

Atop the flying disk planet known as Discworld, flying along in infinite space, foul things are transpiring in the famous city of Ahnk-Morpork. A dark guild have brought back a great beast, one that no one really believes in. But they will before long. Not standing still, the wizards of Unseen University send their most expendable wizard to destroy the threat. Rincewind, the wizzard, er, I mean wizard, is the worlds most inept wizard. He’d much rather run away from the dragon than confront and destroy it, and it doesn’t make things any better that the evil bad guys and even Death him-self are all right on his tail. Can Rincewind keep all of Ahnk-Morpork from becoming nice little fried Morporkians? Play this delightful little adventure and find out for yourself.

Star Trek – Judgment Rites

Rather than having a single plot, the story of Star Trek: Judgment Rites basically unfolds over a bunch of episodes that you play to get to the end of the game. The main plot has Kirk and his crew trying to find the whereabouts of a mysterious alien race called the Brassica. Kirk first learns about this race in the episode “Light And Darkness”. Over 8 episodes, the crew meets many old friends and old enemies, including the Klingons. In the final episode, Kirk must come face to face with the Brassica and undergo the ultimate “judgement rite” to see if the human race is worthy to befriend the Brassica.

So those are the options… Vote in the poll and you should see videos starting in around a month to two months :P
